Slade Reaches Deal To Stay Out Of Prison

POSTED: Wednesday, March 26, 2008
UPDATED: 10:35 am CDT March 27, 2008

Former TSU President Priscilla Slade reached a plea deal that will keep her out of prison, KPRC Local 2 reported Wednesday.

Slade was accused of misspending more than $500,000 of university funds to, among other things, furnish and landscape her home.

A seven-week trial ended with a mistrial when jurors could not reach a verdict, but prosecutors planned to present the case to a new jury.

Under the deal, Slade would be given 10 years of deferred adjudication and be forced to pay the university more than $127,000.

After the deal was reached, Slade read a statement accepting responsibility and then apologized to the university.

Another former TSU official is spending time in prison for his part in the spending scandal.

Former financial chief Quintin Wiggins is serving a 10-year prison term on a May conviction of misapplication of fiduciary property.
