Rodeo Houston Sets New Records

POSTED: Monday, March 24, 2008
UPDATED: 2:41 pm CDT March 24, 2008

The 76th annual Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo ended on Saturday, setting numerous records, KPRC Local 2 reported.

More than 1,802,000 people visited during the three-week-long event. It was the third-highest general attendance in the show's history, according to organizers. The general attendance record was set in 2004 with a total of 1,890,174 visitors.

The March 9 performance of Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus broke the all-time paid attendance record with 73,459. The same performer set the previous record with 73,291 guests in attendance in 2007.

Brad Paisley drew the next largest crowd in 2008, with 73,003 in attendance, which was third in the overall rodeo attendance record.

Fergie came in third with 72,777 in attendance -- sixth in overall attendance.

Despite calls for a boycott because a Tejano act was not included, the show's Go Tejano Day set an attendance record with 71,165 people.

The previous Go Tejano Day record of 70,481 was set in 2006.

A record 209,313 people visited the World's Championship Bar-B-Que Contest to kick off the show, which topped last year's attendance record of 190,913.

Officials said a lot of money was raised for scholarships through auctions. Total auction sales tallied $11,262,278.

Since the show's inception in 1932, the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo has contributed more than $220 million to scholarships and other educational and youth programs, according to organizers.
