Candle Sparks Vacant House Fire

POSTED: Thursday, March 20, 2008
UPDATED: 3:52 pm CDT March 20, 2008

A candle caused a fire at a northwest Houston building, officials told KPRC Local 2 on Thursday.

Firefighters responded to a blaze in a vacant house that had been converted to commercial property in the 1000 block of the North Loop near Hinton, about 12:45 p.m. on Wednesday.

One man was rescued by firefighters. No one was injured.

Arson investigators ruled the cause as "accidental due to an unattended candle."

The building had been scheduled for demolition.

The Houston Fire Department said caution should be used with candles, and it released the following safety tips.

  • Use candles only with constant adult supervision.
  • Extinguish all candles when leaving a room or going to sleep.
  • Keep candles away from items that can catch fire.
  • Place candles and candle holders on a secure piece of furniture. Make sure candleholders are non-combustible and large enough to collect the dripping wax.
  • Do not place lighted candles in windows, where blinds or curtains can close over them.
  • Keep wicks trimmed to 1/4 inch, and extinguish candles when they burn to within two inches of the holder.
  • Keep candles and all open flames away from flammable liquids.
  • Do not use candles in places were they can be knocked over by children or pets.
  • Always have a working smoke alarm.
