GALVESTON, Texas -- A Galveston police officer testified about how a 2-month-old baby could fit in a microwave during the trial of the baby's father, KPRC Local 2 reported Monday.
Joshua Mauldin, 20, is charged with felony injury to a child. He has been accused of putting his daughter, Ana, in a Galveston hotel microwave and turning it on for 10 to 20 seconds in May.
Defense attorneys questioned the officer about how the girl was able to fit inside the microwave and how she suffered the third-degree burns.
"She's in there, all 22 inches of her, and her face is turned this way -- to the right. How in the world is she going to get burned on the left side of her face?" defense attorney Sam Cammack III asked.
Dr. Art Sanford, a burn expert at UTMB, also testified on Monday and said Ana had severe burn marks on her head, face, arms and hands. He said the baby was flexible enough to fit inside the microwave.
Ana has received several surgeries and is living with relatives in Texas.
"She has a skin graft for most of that wound down her cheek. Also her left ear, where it previously has been dead, has now been removed," Sanford testified.
Ana faces more surgeries and will probably have future medical problems, according to doctors.
A pediatrician who testified on Friday examined Ana and said the Mauldins' original reasons for the burns did not add up.
"The presentation was that these might have been scald burns from spilled hot water," Dr. James Lukefahr said. "My opinion was that the burn pattern really did not fit that explanation."
The parents gave other versions of how Ana suffered the burns, Lukefahr said. One reason given was a severe sunburn and another was a chemical reaction from a comforter.
Mauldin later admitted that he put Ana in the microwave, prosecutors said. Mauldin allegedly also punched her and put her in a refrigerator and a hotel-room safe.
Attorney Sam Cammack III said Mauldin is mentally ill.
Cammack said Mauldin has been hearing voices since he was 10 and had psychosis, bipolar disorder, severe depression and schizophrenia that was never treated.
Prosecutors said Mauldin knew exactly what he was doing because he locked the hotel doors while he put the baby in the refrigerator, safe and then the microwave because she was crying.
Mauldin's wife, Eva, has blamed Satan for her husband's actions, saying the devil disapproved of his efforts to become a preacher.
If convicted of the felony charge, Mauldin faces with a sentencing range from probation to life in prison. He has been jailed since his arrest.
Mauldin has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.
