City Considers School Zone Cell Phone Ban

POSTED: Monday, March 10, 2008
UPDATED: 12:03 pm CDT March 10, 2008

Talking on a cellular phone while driving in an active school zone may soon be illegal in one city, KPRC Local 2 reports.

West University Place City Council will consider the ordinance at a meeting on Monday.

The West University Place Police Department conducted research on the matter for the past two months. The chief will present the results to city council at the meeting.

There have not been any incidents in school zones, but parents said they would rather take preventative measures immediately than wait for a child to get hurt or killed.

"I think in general, cell phones while people are driving are dangerous," one parent said.

If the ordinance is approved, the law would go into effect at the end of this school year or beginning of the 2008 - 2009 school year.

West University Place was also the first city in Texas to pass a smoking ban.
