HOUSTON -- A 17-year-old fatally bludgeoned a pregnant woman with a baseball bat during a park brawl that erupted after a minor fender-bender, police said.

Paul Lavallais has been charged with murder and was being held on $50,000 bond Saturday in the death of Melissa Spriggs, 27, who was three months pregnant when she was struck in the skull last week, police said.

Lavallais, who was arrested late Friday, allegedly hit Spriggs as she herded relatives into their cars as tensions at Macgregor Park escalated following a minor traffic accident March 2.

Anonymous tips led police to Lavallais, police said. It was not immediately clear if he had an attorney.

Spriggs, who was carrying her second child, died at Ben Taub Hospital on March 4.
