Teacher At Christian School Charged With Sex Assault

A former private school teacher with a northwest Houston church has been accused of sexual assault with a student while his pregnant wife was on bed rest, KPRC Local 2 reported Tuesday.

Christopher Evans, 26, was known a cool teacher at the New Heights Christian Academy, police said, but Evans crossed the line from "cool" to "criminal" last May.

An anonymous student told KPRC Local 2, "He's cool. I hang out with him sometimes after school. I just hear it from the girls that sometimes he would take it a little too far."

"It was disclosed that Christopher Evans liked to do things like hug on the girls, spank the girls on the butt, joke and play, caress the outer arms and legs of these girls, and have girls sit on his lap," Houston Police Department Juvenile Sex Crimes Investigator Joseph Roscoe said.

Police said a 15-year-old female student and her parents complained about that behavior to school administrators, including New Heights Principal Richard Walters, who is Evan's father-in-law.

Police said when the school did nothing, the family filed a police report, prompting an investigation.

Evans is now charged with sexual assault and indecency with a child. He posted bond on Feb. 18.

Police said Evans acted inappropriately with female students in his classroom at New Heights, but the incident with the 15-year-old victim happened at Evans' home.

"She felt like he was a friend -- someone she could confide in. It progressed to kissing, fondling, and went on from there," Roscoe said.

Police reported that Evans' wife, also a teacher at New Heights, was at home on bed rest during her pregnancy while the alleged assaults happened in another room in the house.

Evans' neighbor, Bob Lake, whose granddaughter attends New Heights, was surprised of the allegations.

"He seemed like a nice kid, real nice," Lake said.

HPD is asking other possible victims and their parents to contact the juvenile division at 713-731-5353 or 713-731-5498.

New Heights Christian Academy is located at 1700 W. 43rd St. and affiliated with Oak Forest Baptist Church.
