HOUSTON -- The largest beef recall in the nation's history has several local school districts, including HISD, checking their lunch menus, KPRC Local 2, Your Education Station, reported Monday.
About 143 million pounds of beef from a California slaughterhouse have been recalled. The Department of Agriculture said the recall affects products from the Westland-Hallmark meat company. The company is being investigated for mistreating cattle.
Earlier this year, HISD pulled the meat from its pantries.
HISD spokesman, Terry Abbott said, "We pulled the product Feb. 1 when we started hearing about the possibility of a meat recall. We didn't want to take any chances, so we pulled it off the shelves right away."
The recall also affects Clear Creek ISD in League City.
Officials released the following statement.
"We did not want to take any chances and made the decision early to just remove all Westland meat products from our schools, take the product off our buy list, and adjust campus menus with a different supplier."
Pasadena ISD was also affected. It said, "We are thankful that we had not served the questionable meat to our students because the safety and well-being of our students is always our priority. We are also thankful that our parents and students do not have to worry about whether or not they ate the affected beef."
This meat was never available to the public at supermarkets.
