Strong Storms Damage Homes, Businesses

HOUSTON -- Strong storms that rolled through the Houston area Tuesday left behind a trail of destruction, KPRC Local 2 reported.
The system moved through northwest Harris County at about 11 a.m.
Switchboards at the Cy-Fair and Klein fire departments immediately lit up. Callers reported lightning strikes.
One of the strikes hit a home in the 9000 block of Tallowwood Drive at about 11:30 a.m.
The Klein Fire Department was supposed to be the first agency to respond, but they were so swamped that the Cy-Fair Fire Department pitched in to help.
"We had a number of weather-related incidents working when we received this call," said Jason Hearnsberger with the Klein Fire Department.
The homeowner and her cat escaped without harm, but their home was severely damaged.
"The fire started high up in an unoccupied space of the residence," Hearnsberger said.
Northeast Houston did not get through the storms without damage.
A wall at a 99-cent store Normandy Street near North Forest Boulevard collapsed. Workers spent hours trying to salvage merchandise and cleaning up the rest of the mess.
The storms were out of the area by about 3 p.m.
No injuries were reported.
Officials advised residents to turn off all electrical items during storms to stay safe.
