Baby Thrown In Trash Clings To Life

UPDATED: 6:53 pm CST February 12, 2008

A newborn baby who was found dumped in a trash bin at a southwest Houston is fighting for his life while his mother sits in jail, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Genny Granados, 29, was appointed an attorney during her appearance before a judge at about 2 a.m. Tuesday. She has been charged with felony injury to a child.

Child Protective Services officials said Granados went to Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital on Saturday complaining of stomach cramps.

She went into the lobby restroom and delivered a baby boy weighing just under five pounds, officials said. She was more than eight months pregnant.

Granados wrapped the baby in paper towels before putting him in the trash bin in the restroom while she waited to see a doctor, investigators said.

A cleaning crew later found the baby and officials were able to revive him. He was taken to Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital, where he is receiving treatment in the neonatal intensive care unit. He is listed in critical condition.

"Right now he's in such grave condition that we are monitoring his status," spokeswoman Estella Olguin said.

Granados told officials that she did not realize she was pregnant.

According to court documents, Granados told investigators that she has two children and did not want another one.

"The 10- and 2-year-olds are currently staying with the father with the oldest child," Olguin said. "But yesterday the father of 2-year-old came by our office and he wants his 2-year-old."

Officials said Granados tested positive for barbiturates. If taken in small doses, barbiturates act as tranquilizers while they act as sleeping pills when taken in large doses.

Granados' boyfriend said he had no idea she was pregnant and added that he was positive he was not the father of the child. He said she suddenly left him about a week ago.

Granados' bond was set at $35,000.
