HOUSTON -- Volunteers are using clothing to try to find a missing pregnant woman, but strong winds make it difficult for search dogs to follow her scent, KPRC Local 2 reported Friday.
Tierra Adams, 25, is due to give birth on Valentine's Day. She has been missing since her alleged boyfriend dropped her off on the side of North Houston Rosslyn Road near state Highway 249 at about 1 a.m. on Jan. 29.
Adams' mother, Rose Adams-Itive said Neriah Roberts, Adams' alleged boyfriend, told her the two got into an argument after he caught Adams smoking.
"I'm very concerned for her safety at this point. There's some reasons for me to believe that she's deeply in danger if not harmed already,"
Texas EquuSearch coordinator Frank Black said.
One searcher said she joined Texas EquuSearch because she was compelled by the case.
"She's a young mother," she said. "I just wanted to help."
Black said they have used Adams' old clothes to help search dogs pick up her scent, but the weather is hindering their mission.
"The winds have been changing constantly, so it's very hard for the dog to tell which direction that the scent is coming from, but he keeps leading into one specific area," Black said.
The area the dog keeps leading searchers to is about a quarter-mile from where Adams was dropped off.
Volunteers planned to search a sandpit and a creek on Friday. They also planned to distribute flyers in the area where she was last seen.
Roberts denied being Adams' boyfriend and said he does not know if he is the father of her child. He said he caught Adams smoking drugs at his house.
He claimed Adams said she did not want to go home to her parents because she would get in trouble. Roberts said he dropped Adams off when she put up a fight.
"She can't stay at my house with her drug habits," Roberts said.
Police have interviewed Roberts, but they are not calling him a suspect. He volunteered to help in the search on Thursday, but refused to answer any questions from the media. He told police that he has no idea where Adams may be.
Adams-Itive denied that her daughter had a drug problem.
Adams is black, 5 feet 6 inches and weighs about 200 pounds. She was last seen wearing white Capri pants and a black and white shirt.
Anyone who has seen Adams or would like to volunteer in the search was asked to call Texas EquuSearch at 281-309-9500.
