HOUSTON -- Arson investigators have detained a man and a woman in connection with a fire in northeast Houston, KPRC Local 2 reported.
The fire started around 4:30 a.m. Monday inside a home attached to an auto shop on Laura Koppe Road near Lawnridge Street.
District Chief Harold Vaughn said that the home was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived. Explosions of several paint cans and aerosol bottles prevented crews from immediately going inside to fight the fire, so they attacked the flames from the outside.
After crews extinguished the fire, Houston police detained Dail J. Apostolo, the owner of the business, along with a woman at the scene.
When asked what happened, the unidentified woman told KPRC Local 2, "All I know is him and his wife was having problems and she started the fire. She tried to catch herself on fire."
The fire chief said it seems a domestic dispute preceded the fire, but the actual cause is still unknown.
"PD is detaining some of the individuals here," Vaughn said. "May be related to a domestic issue, but at this time it's under investigation."
Arson investigators took Apostolo and the woman in for questioning. Police said Apostolo's wife was taken in for a neuropsychological evaluation.
Nobody was injured during the fire.
