HOUSTON -- A backup computer tape with J.C. Penney's and as many as 100 other retailers' customer and employee personal information has disappeared from a secure storage facility. No one can find it.
That concerned J.C. Penney customer Walter Pissani in Pasadena, Harris County. Pissani said, "I hope J.C. Penney does something about it, you know? Cause we got J.C. Penney cards, you know? We hope somebody do something."
GE Money, the company that handles the information for J.C. Penney's and other large stores, said the private information belonging to 650,000 credit card customers is missing.
The information includes Social Security numbers for about 150,000 people.
J.C. Penney customer Mary Gonzales said, "I just can't believe that they would have something like this happen and yeah, I don't think that it's good for people to let anybody get their information. I do plan on calling the company and seeing what they are going to do about it."
GE Money released a statement saying, "There is no evidence to indicate that the tape has been stolen, or that information on this tape has been either accessed or misused. Accessing its contents would require the use of extremely sophisticated computer equipment and technical knowledge."
The company said it is taking steps to make sure something like this does not happen again.
