Mom Of Children In 'Home Alone' Case Heads Home

POSTED: Wednesday, January 16, 2008
UPDATED: 4:58 pm CST January 16, 2008

The mother of six children found alone inside a northwest Harris County home is headed back to Texas after she allegedly left them to travel to Nigeria to get married, KPRC Local 2 reported Wednesday.

Child Protective Services officials said they talked to Shanell Monique Mosley for a little more than one minute.

Mosley, 33, told officials that she was aware that she has been charged with child endangerment and abandonment. Officials said she told them that she does not want to lose her children.

Harris County sheriff's deputies said Mosley's children, along with two toddlers who belonged to a neighbor, were found in a home in the 11000 block of Barker Grove on Jan. 2.

Investigators said Mosley's 15-year-old daughter was in charge of the brood since Christmas Eve. She resorted to stealing to get diapers for a 1-year-old, deputies said.

The children were found after the daughter crashed a van into the home's garage. She broke down and told a school counselor about the situation, officials said.

"When we found the children, they were alone. They didn't have any money. There was no food in the house," CPS spokeswoman Estella Olguin said. "There was really no means for the 15-year-old to take care of the rest of her siblings. (Mosley) is aware that she may be arrested as soon as she returns to the United States."

Mosley denied leaving the children without supervision, officials said. She told investigators that she arranged for her sister to come from New Orleans and stay with the children. However, the sister said she could not afford it.

Mosley has a total of eight children, officials said. CPS officials said she previously told a social worker that the status of their fathers was none of their business. Two of her older children are incarcerated.

The father of Mosley's 1-year-old son, James Rayford Jr., appeared in court on Wednesday, asking for custody.

Rayford's son was in the worst condition when the children were found.

"He was the most vulnerable. He was 1 year old and obviously needs to be on a certain diet and there was no food for him, and the home was really in deplorable conditions -- too dangerous for a 1-year-old," Olguin said.

"We're going to work this out. I want them all back. I have plenty of grandkids and I love them all and we're going to get James," the baby's grandmother said.

The judge ruled that Mosley's six children should remain in foster care until Mosley returns.

Detectives said the father who left his 3- and 4-year-old children at the home will not face charges. The children were returned to his care.

Mosley did not leave any contact information with neighbors or her family, officials said. She was not scheduled to return to Houston until next month.

"She did try to make arrangements to return sooner because her return flight was not until Feb. 16, so she desperately wants to come back and wants to resolve this situation," Olguin said.
