3 Children, 2 Adults Killed In Fire

POSTED: Monday, January 7, 2008
UPDATED: 5:23 pm CST January 7, 2008

A family of five died after their Brazoria County home caught fire early Monday, KPRC Local 2 reported.

The fire broke out as the family slept in their home at the Longwood Trailer Park on F.M. 424 near Highway 35 south of Alvin, Texas, shortly after midnight.

Investigators searched the home and found the bodies of 26-year-old Rosa Aguilar, 33-year-old Ignacio Contreras and 4-year-old Ignacio Jr. Two other children, 1-year-old Vincente and 7-year-old Yazmin Reyes, were rushed by helicopter to Memorial Hermann Hospital with CPR in progress. Neither child survived.

"We don't have no money to be able to bury the kids," relative Francisca Borjas said.

All five likely died from inhaling smoke, officials said.

"They were very outgoing people," Borjas said. "The husband worked hard. He was a roofer. My sister-in-law stayed home and took care of her kids."

The family recently moved to the area from central Mexico. The couple had a common-law marriage and were not United States citizens, relatives said.

The girl was bright and "very happy to be in the U.S and learning English," Borjas said.

"There was some fire damage in the center part of the house, a lot of smoke damage," Brazoria County Fire Marshal Al Priselac said.

Detectives said they do not know if the home had working smoke detectors.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Detectives said it may have started in the kitchen.

The family is setting up a bank account to accept donations for funeral expenses.
