Car Burglars Target Apartment Complexes
POSTED: Wednesday, December 19, 2007
HUMBLE, Texas -- Three people have been arrested in connection with a string of car burglaries, KPRC Local 2 reported.
Humble police said someone broke into cars at apartment complexes in north Houston and Humble late Tuesday and early Wednesday.
An alert resident of the Park at Deerbrook Apartments in the 19000 block of Whitaker Road called police and reported witnessing a burglary.
An officer spotted the car the witness reported and chased the suspected burglars for about a mile. The chase ended when they stopped on McKay Drive.
Officers arrested the driver and two passengers, but a third passenger ran away.
"We found car stereos, amplifiers, GPS units, tools ... even a gift bag with jewelry in their car," Sgt. Mike Nansel said.
Two of the suspects have been charged with evading arrest.
Police suggested that motorists clean out their cars to make them less attractive to thieves. They also recommended keeping all holiday purchases in the trunk rather than the back seat.
"Take everything of value inside the home," Nansel said. "This time of year vehicles are being targeted because of the shoppers. Criminals are looking at vehicles in parking lots to see if everybody has taken all of their items back into their house after they've done their daily shopping."
Detectives said they need the victims to come forward so they can get their property back. Anyone who believes they may have been a victim can call Humble police at 281-446-7127.
