The family of a 2-year-old girl who was known for a while as only "Baby Grace" flew to the Houston area to visit where she lived and pay respects to her final resting place, KPRC Local 2 reported Tuesday.

Riley Ann Sawyers' identity was a mystery for weeks after a box holding her tiny body washed ashore in Galveston Bay. Her paternal grandmother in Ohio led police to Kimberly Dawn Trenor, 19, and Royce Clyde Zeigler II, 24, after seeing a police artist's rendering of the murdered girl.

Trenor and Zeigler were charged with capital murder and tampering with evidence, and could face the death penalty or life in prison without parole if convicted.

Riley's paternal grandmother, Sheryl Sawyers, and Riley's father, Robert Sawyers, visited Riley's home in Spring

"They're here to find all the pieces of the puzzle, to try to make sense of the situation. Sheryl just said to me, as she was coming here, 'I'm glad we did this. I'm glad we came. This is very helpful. But it's very draining, very emotional,'" said Laura DePledge, the Sawyers' attorney.

They spoke with neighbors who remembered Riley's smile. Neighbors tearfully said they wish they could have protected her.

The Sawyers brought photo collages of Riley to give to dedicated investigators and others who worked tirelessly on her case.

On Monday, Riley's grandmother and father saw the memorial to Riley, which consists of a cross on the remote Galveston island where Riley's body washed ashore.

"Probably the most emotional thing was going to the Causeway (where her body was dumped). We talked about that. The Causeway is where there was a total disregard for Riley as a human being. At least the island is where she was rescued," DePledge said.

The Sawyers want to take Riley's body home to Ohio to be buried. But motions filed by defense attorneys would keep the child's body in Galveston until the trial.

Trenor told Galveston County authorities that she and her husband of less than two months beat the girl with leather belts, held her head underwater in a bathtub and threw her across a room, her head slamming into a tile floor. She said they kept her body in a shed for one to two months before dumping it in the bay.

Shortly after the couple was arrested, Trenor's attorney told reporters that Zeigler had lost control while disciplining Riley for failing to say "please" and "yes sir."

The Sawyers said that if prosecutors seek the death penalty against Trenor and Zeigler, they would support it.
