HOUSTON -- A northeast Houston homeowner said the police department needs to fix her home because one of their cars caused a lot of damage, KPRC Local 2 reported Monday.
Earnestine Washington was asleep in her home on Charlesmont Street near Rebel Road early Dec. 2 when something strange woke her up.
"I heard something like an airplane had landed on top of my house," said Washington. "I thought it was on fire because there were lights going around and around."
Instead of an airplane, Washington found a police car sitting in her front yard. She said that the cruiser hit her sport utility vehicle and the impact pushed her SUV into her dining room. Windows, burglar bars and her furniture were all broken.
Washington said, "I think he was chasing out another car. So he said. His brakes played out. He came through three yards and he stopped in my yard."
She wants the city to pay, but there are no promises.
KPRC Local 2 contacted the city's legal department. A city attorney said every case is different. But in some cases, the city is not liable. He provided Washington with information on who to contact for help.
"I think they're supposed to fix it," Washington said. "That's their responsibility. I was in my bed asleep. They come up in my house."
