HOUSTON -- A customer was fatally shot when two men opened fire during a grocery store robbery, KPRC Local 2 reported.
Houston police said the men tried to force a cashier to open the courtesy booth at the Fiesta store on Fulton Street near Patton Street shortly before 9 p.m. Friday.
The cashier did not have a key to the booth. The men, who were armed with a pistol and shotgun, began shooting, officials said.
Investigators said a security guard returned fire.
Police said Janette Dominguez, 68, was standing in a checkout lane when she was hit in the crossfire. She was rushed to Ben Taub Hospital, where she died. Police are working to determine who shot her.
The security guard was also shot, officials said. He was rushed to Ben Taub Hospital in stable condition.
Detectives said the security guard may have shot one of the men.
The men ran from the store and jumped into a stolen minivan, detectives said. They crashed the van into a nearby ditch and got away in a dark-colored Lincoln, police said.
Investigators said they found blood on the airbags in the minivan.
Harris County sheriff's deputies said a man's body was found in a residential neighborhood. Officials said he may have been one of the men involved in the robbery. The Harris County Medical Examiner's Office will determine the man's identity and cause of death.
Police questioned several customers who were in the store during the robbery. Detectives said they hope the store's surveillance tapes will help them identify the men.
Anyone with information was asked to call the Houston Police Department Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
