FULSHEAR, Texas -- Neighbors are having a difficult time dealing with a retired teacher's death that resulted from a home invasion, KPRC Local 2 reported Friday.
Fort Bend County sheriff's deputies said Martha Fields died Thursday, two days after she was stabbed in her home in the gated Weston Lakes subdivision.
"I was in tears. It still is tough today," neighbor Muriel Myers said. "She's only 54. That's young."
Investigators said two men posed as deliverymen to get through the gates. They knocked on Fields' door and told her she had a package, officials said. When Fields said she was not expecting a package the men forced their way inside, tied her up and demanded money, deputies said.
The men ransacked the house and stabbed Fields several times, investigators said.
"I saw this traffic and thought it was oh somebody was having a holiday party," Myers said.
"I think everybody's just in shock," neighbor Kathryn Sheffield said.
Sheriff Milton Wright said this is a lesson for everyone.
"You're not safe from crime no matter where you are," he said.
Neighbors said they do not fault their security.
"Thousands of cars come through," Myers said. "Sometimes people slip through."
Residents said they are making themselves more secure in their own homes.
"We're all going to keep our doors locked, that's for sure," Myers said.
Security guards are now asking for photo identification before they allow anyone in the neighborhood.
Residents have collected more than $35,000 to offer a reward for the men's arrests. Crime Stoppers has offered an additional $5,000 reward.
Anyone with information is asked to call Fort Bend County Crime Stoppers at 281-342-TIPS.
