HOUSTON -- A driver claimed that he led police on a 25-mile police chase on Monday because his parking brake was stuck, officials told KPRC Local 2.
"He claimed that his parking brake was stuck and he couldn't stop," Sgt. Vincent Jones said. "My guess is he had a few felonies on his back and did not want to go to jail."
Police said the 40-minute chase started when an officer spotted the stolen GMC Yukon. The chase wound through southeast, downtown and north Houston.
"Anytime someone flees from police, it's always pretty brazen because at night, on our night chases, the freeway's wide open," Jones said. "He seems to want to go faster."
Police said the driver caused at least three wrecks, but no one was hurt. The driver jumped several curbs, which apparently flattened a front tire. The SUV was riding on its rim and spewing sparks along the way.
The driver eventually stopped the stolen car near downtown. He tried to run from police, but an officer tackled him.
Police said the driver violated his parole for a previous unauthorized use of a motor vehicle charge. Investigators said he will face charges for felony evading, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and parole violation.
The driver's name was not released.
