HOUSTON -- A 57-year-old man with a history of violent crime is on the run and wanted for killing an acquaintance during a friendly get-together, KPRC Local 2 reported Monday.
Officials said Roy William Hooper shot and killed Thomas Ford, 27, in northwest Harris County late Sunday night.
Harris County sheriff's deputies said Ford and his girlfriend visited three acquaintances at a home on Cypress North Houston Road near Telge Road at about 11:20 p.m.
Investigators said the get-together turned ugly when Hooper pulled a pistol and ordered Ford to hand over his money.
Ford laughed it off and thought it was a joke, according to witnesses.
That's when they said Hooper pulled the trigger and took $600 cash from Ford's pocket, deputies said. Hooper threatened to shoot Ford's pregnant girlfriend on the way out, according to authorities.
Ford was rushed to a nearby hospital and died from his injuries.
The girlfriend was not injured.
Investigators said they are looking for Hooper. He is white, 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighs 189 pounds. He was last seen driving an orange late '80s Dodge pickup truck.
Deputies said Hooper, 57, was charged with capital murder because Ford was robbed before he was killed. Hooper has an extensive history of violent crime and should be considered armed and dangerous, officials said.
Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
