A reserve deputy who was killed during a robbery outside his southeast Houston apartment was honored at his memorial service on Wednesday, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Carltrell Odom, 22, joined the Harris County Precinct 6 constable's office as a reserve deputy in 2005. The part-time position required him to put in 24 hours a month, but he often worked three or four times that many hours.

At the same time, Odom held down a security job and attended college.

He was popular with fellow officers. Many of them wept when they learned he was killed on Thursday.

Deputy Juvencio Ramos was Odom's best friend.

"So many people loved him," Ramos said. "It just brings a warm feeling to your heart of how much impact he had on everybody. Everybody in our unit, we're all hurting. We're just shocked that this can just happen and we're all going to miss him dearly. He was a brother to us."

Precinct 6 Constable Victor Trevino and U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee spoke at the service.

"I don't know about you, but I love that name and frankly, when we say it, I think it deserves an applause," Jackson Lee said.

Odom was remembered for being so enthusiastic about becoming a deputy constable, he convinced Trevino to waive the age limit and let him join at 20, which was the youngest deputy on the force.

"We used to tease him because in the state of Texas, you have to be 21 years old to buy bullets. So, we didn't know how he was going to get the bullets to put in his gun," Trevino said.

Four teenagers have been charged with capital murder in connection with his death.

Because Odom was a part-time deputy, he did not have the same benefits package full-time deputies have. Several companies and individuals donated services and items for his funeral.

A trust fund has also been set up in Odom's memory. Donations can be made at the Harris County Federal Credit Union, 1400 Franklin Street.
