Texans Lineman Apologizes For Arrest

POSTED: Friday, November 30, 2007
UPDATED: 5:17 pm CST November 30, 2007

Houston Texans offensive lineman Chester Pitts apologized Friday for getting arrested after a traffic stop, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Houston police said that they were conducting a traffic enforcement operation on West Bellfort Avenue at Kirby Drive when an officer said he saw Pitts and another driver make an illegal left turn.

He stopped both of the vehicles and told Pitts to pull over and wait.

The officer said that after a few minutes, Pitts took off before officers could write him a ticket, and police followed.

He was stopped a half-mile away and was arrested, police said.

Pitts was booked in jail Thursday night and was charged with felony evading. He posted a $2,000 bond.

Pitts held a news conference on Friday.

"It was a huge, huge misunderstanding. I'm sorry," he said. "I'd like to apologize to the officers. It was clearly a misunderstanding. I would never disrespect the law. My father has been a police officer for 30 years. I have the utmost respect for law enforcement."

Police said that Pitts was told by officers why he was flagged down -- for an illegal left turn and not wearing a seat belt. Officers said he left the scene anyway.

Texans owner Bob McNair said he heard the full story from Pitts.

"He did not understand that they wanted him to stay there. Let's just leave it at that. He thought he was being waved on, but we'll let them look into it further and determine what the facts are," McNair said.

Pitts took part in Texans practice on Friday.

Coach Gary Kubiak said Pitts would play in Sunday's game against Tennessee.

"Chester has a job to do for this football team -- myself and his teammates are expecting him to step up and play good football this weekend," Kubiak said.

Pitts has a court date on Monday.

Pitts has been with the Texans since the franchise began, anchoring their offensive line.

He has never been in trouble with the law before.
