Most Dangerous Toy List Released

POSTED: Tuesday, November 20, 2007
UPDATED: 5:59 pm CST November 20, 2007

Texas Children's Hospital and the Texas Public Interest Research Group released a list of dangerous toys on Tuesday, KPRC Local 2 reported.

The toys on the list are determined by several factors including choking and strangulation hazards, powerful magnets and lead content.

Parents were urged to check toys for hidden dangers before they are purchased.

"When getting a toy for your child, read all the warnings on the packages if it comes with one," Dr. Joseph Allen said. "Examine the toy itself, play with it and make sure there is nothing that a child could possibly expose themselves to from an injury standpoint."

Several toys with small balls, marbles and balloons were deemed most dangerous.

Doctors at Texas Children's Hospital said parents can do a quick test to determine if a toy could harm their child. If a toy fits into a toilet paper tube, it is probably too small for a 3-year-old child or younger.

Parents should also weigh the risks a toy could pose to any child in a home, doctors said.

"While the toy itself may be appropriate for the child you're giving it to, if you've got a younger sibling in the house or that they visit, you have to think about the injuries that that child may suffer as a result of it," Allen said.
