HOUSTON -- Employees of a north Houston clothing store are spending the day cleaning up after a car crashed into it early Friday, KPRC Local 2 reports.
Houston police said a driver crashed a green Buick into the Label Warehouse in the 2300 block of North Main shortly before 3 a.m.
Investigators said the driver may have been drunk. He and his passenger ran away from the scene, police said.
The store was severely damaged as the car stopped in the middle of the store. A tow truck had to pull it out.
Thousands of dollars worth of merchandise was destroyed or damaged.
The driver knocked a light pole down before crashing into the store, detectives said.
Long-time customer Tamara Miles said she was at the shop on Thursday and was glad that the crash happened while no one was there.
"I can't believe it," she said. "God is good that I wasn't in here."
Employee Maricella Perez said this was the first time anything like this has happened.
"We've been here maybe like 30 years, 35 years," she said.
The store's owner did not show up until about 8 a.m. He received a ticket for violating a city ordinance that requires owners to be present at their business within an hour of a break-in.
Officers stayed at the scene until the owner arrived to make sure looters did not go inside.
No injuries were reported.
