Woman's Missing Service Dog Found

By Ryan Korsgard

POSTED: Thursday, November 15, 2007

For nearly a week, 19-year-old Delayna White feared her independence was gone.

She was in a car wreck and her dog, Gabe, disappeared. Gabe is a service dog. He could warn her of panic attacks before they happen.

White suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder.

"I didn't know if he was hurt, able to walk away," said White. "Shock. Panic. Fear. I was already not OK from the wreck."

Gabe came from myservicedog.com in Houston.

"It's her way of getting out into the world and saying, Hey, it's going to be OK because my dog's right here with me," said Allie Keaton of myservicedog.com.

Keaton was determined to reunite the two.

"I've seen Gabe spend time with her, then apart and Gabriel was depressed for three days after the first time they spent time together," said Keaton.

A family, near Beaumont, found Gabe alongside a road. Amazingly, it was a family with a 10-year-old son with epilepsy. Gabe knew when Tyler Landry was about to have a seizure.

"He zoned out. Gabe came up and just kind of started leaning against his knees and just kind of stood there for a minute while Tyler was doing his thing," said Melinda Landry. "I knew, with the way that he reacted to my son, he must be something special. Somebody has done some sort of training."

With the help of friends and media attention, Landry found White's family about 45 miles away.

"I feel like I've got my independence back," White said. "I feel like I have life in general back, and I have control over what happens to me."

Now, Tyler's family is interested in a service dog to help him live with his seizures.
