Girl Found In Box Still Unidentified

The body of a little girl found in box remained unidentified for a second day, KPRC Local 2 reported Wednesday.

Investigators are reaching out to everyone possible in an effort to figure out the girl's identity and who dumped her body in a storage box on an island in Galveston Bay.

The box, in plain view, contained the body of a 2 to 5-year-old girl.

"You wonder what kind of person would put them in a box and just dump them in the water like that. That's hard to believe," fisherman Mel Smith said.

Investigators have focused on missing person cases in both state and nationwide databases, searching for similarities.

Because no one has come forward to identify the girl, they are making an emotional plea to anyone who may know her identity.

"We're dealing with a little girl here. We're dealing with a person. She's not an unidentified body. To us, we merely don't know her name," said Maj. Ray Tuttoilmondo with the Galveston County Sheriff's Office.

The girl was found on a marshy, grassy island near Green's Cut, about five miles west-southwest of the Galveston Causeway.

Investigators said she had blonde hair to the middle of her back. She was nearly 3 feet tall and weighed 25 to 30 pounds.

She was wearing a pink pullover top and a pink broom skirt. Both were the Cherokee brand. She also wore white and purple tennis shoes that were children's size 8 1/2.

Investigators said their main objective is putting a name with the description.

"How she died is really kind of secondary right now. This may have been the result of a very tragic accident. Right now, we don't know that," Tuttoilmondo said.

Texas EquuSearch is also involved in the case, hoping to generate leads.

"We're going to get it up on the front page of our site and just get thousands and thousands of e-mails out," said Tim Miller with Texas EquuSearch.

Miller said there is a good chance the girl is not from the area.

"That's not an appropriate burial for a little girl -- to be left on a small island in west Galveston Bay. That's not right," Tuttoilmondo said.

Officials said the girl suffered three skull fractures.
