HPD: Driver Tries To Run Over Officer During Traffic Stop
POSTED: Wednesday, October 17, 2007
HOUSTON -- A driver tried to run over a police officer during a traffic stop in southwest Houston early Wednesday, officials told KPRC Local 2.
Houston police said the officer stopped the driver on South Post Oak Road near Highway 90 at about 1 a.m. because one of his headlights was out.
The officer approached the car and saw empty beer cans inside, officials said. The officer also smelled alcohol on the driver's breath, police said.
Investigators said the officer was about to give the driver a test to determine if he was intoxicated when the driver suddenly tried to take off.
The driver backed up and tried to run over the officer, police said.
Officials said the driver hit a fence and then led officers on a chase that lasted about 5 minutes.
The chase ended when the driver ran out of gas and got stuck in mud on Player Street near Trail Lake Drive.
A patrol car and two tow trucks also got stuck in mud.
Police said the driver was arrested. He did not have a driver's license, officials said.
Detectives said they noticed the man had several stab wounds to his chest. They appeared to be self-inflicted, investigators said.
The driver was taken to Ben Taub Hospital for treatment. Police said his blood would be drawn to determine if he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Investigators said the driver faces charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon of a police officer, criminal mischief and possession of drug paraphernalia. Other charges could be added, detectives said.
