Slade's Mistrial Comes During TSU Homecoming

By Carl Willis

POSTED: Sunday, October 14, 2007

Homecoming at Texas Southern University is a tradition and a celebration. The events went into full swing and some began celebrating more -- especially after former university President Priscilla Slade's mistrial.

"Overcoming her boundaries and everything, and overcoming adversity, that makes it a whole lot better," TSU student James Jones said.

"God has been victorious in this matter and we're going to continue to be victorious in the future," added Clarice Gatlin, who graduated with the class of 1964.

As TSU alumni came home to their school, many found that there are two different schools of thought on this issue.

Slade was accused of misspending more than $500,000 of university funds to, among other things, furnish and landscape her home.

Some students said they were disappointed that a jury could not make a decision after seven weeks of testimony.

"I don't want to say it's unfortunate; neither do I want to say justice was served at the same point," student C.J. Nwuba said. "It's something that needs to be resolved."

Most students agreed that it is time to move forward and get past this chapter in TSU's history.

"I can't be worried about what happened to Priscilla Slade," student Ray Lemons said. "Priscilla Slade has to worry about what she has to get into. She's before the judge and jury -- that's her quest. My quest is trying to pass biology!"

While the jury could not reach a verdict in Slade's trial, another former TSU official is spending time in prison for his part in the spending scandal.

Former financial chief Quintin Wiggins is serving a 10-year prison term on a May conviction of misapplication of fiduciary property.
