TSU Students, Alumni React To Slade's Mistrial

By Elizabeth Scarborough

POSTED: Saturday, October 13, 2007

As Texas Southern University began celebrating homecoming weekend on Friday, alumni from all over the country talked about one thing -- former President Priscilla Slade's mistrial, KPRC Local 2 reported Friday.

"Some things she did was wrong," said one alumna.

Another said, "I was sorry. I wish she had been acquitted."

On campus, students were abuzz with the news.

"If they could not come up with the evidence enough for the jury, then I guess she's not guilty," freshman DiAngilo Hiler said.

Some said that a weekend that was supposed to be filled with so much school pride was tainted by the hung jury.

Justin Jordan is one of three students who initially turned in evidence on Slade. He said he is glad there was a trial, but is not surprised by the outcome.

"It was a relief just to be able to stand up and tell your side of the story, to tell what happened to me, to us, for trying to stand up for what was right," said Jordan.

While everyone had different opinions about what Slade's fate should have been, they all said they wish they could put this chapter of the university's history behind them.

"We need to bring closure to this, and get back to a focus on educating students," alumna Joyce Norfleet said.

Alumni President Christopher LeBlanc said, "We need to move forward...without Dr. Slade."
