Tidwell, Hilliard Elementary Schools To Merge

An air quality report from a northeast Houston elementary school prompted the North Forest Independent School District to close the school for mold cleanup and more testing, KPRC Local 2 reported.

The district announced the decision at Wednesday's school board, just hours after students at Tidwell Elementary School were dismissed early because of "facility problems."

"We want to make sure they're not in that environment for people to get sick and everything," School Board President Barbara Gaston said. "We want to make sure that they're in a safe, clean environment until it's cleaned up and further studies are done to find out exactly what's in there."

Beginning Tuesday, Tidwell students will temporarily attend classes at Hilliard Elementary School. Tidwell students will have Thursday and Friday off, and Monday is a district-wide day off.

Some parents were not pleased with what they heard, or did not hear.

"They didn't talk to us. They talked at us." parent Dr. L. Gillam said. "Personally, I came here thinking they was going to talk to us. I think that they owe the families a lot more than what they gave us."

The district plans to tell parents more at a meeting Thursday night at Hilliard. The combined enrollment is expected to be 1,080 students.
