Defense Close To Wrapping Up Slade Trial

POSTED: Wednesday, October 3, 2007
UPDATED: 5:48 pm CDT October 3, 2007

The final witnesses in the trial of former Texas Southern University President Priscilla Slade took the stand on Wednesday, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Earnest Gibson was one of the few regents who supported Slade and did not want her fired.

Gibson said that Slade had been doing such a good job that they had considered giving her a lucrative five-year contract.

That was before allegations surfaced that she had spent university money on her personal home for landscaping, furniture and a security system.

Mike DeGeurin, Slade's attorney, said he is close to wrapping up his case. He said he wants the jury to know about the good Slade did for the university.

"I want everything to be seen," he said. "Everything from different perspectives, the reality of running a school. I think that's coming out."

Former Texas Gov. Mark White and State Rep. Sylvester Turner testified on Slade's behalf on Tuesday.

Both men said that Slade needed a nice home so she could entertain wealthy potential donors.

"Even if a person has done some wrong, you can't ignore the good the people do," Turner said. "The good is what the good is."

Slade has been charged with two felony counts of misapplication of fiduciary property. If convicted, she could face punishment ranging from probation to life in prison.
