HOUSTON -- Police officers will search Acres Homes on horseback, looking for clues and evidence they hope will lead to finding the people who killed seven women found dead in the area in the past two years, KPRC Local 2 reported.
Houston Police Chief Harold Hurtt made the announcement at a meeting at the Galilee Missionary Baptist Church Monday night.
"I believe the Houston Police Department can do more, and they can do better in Acres Homes," said Quanell X of the New Black Panther Nation. "I don't understand why it took seven African-American females to be found in Acres Homes before the Mayor and the city decided it was time to come out here and start chopping down weeds and cutting grass."
Houston police said they have never considered the seven dead bodies to be the work of a serial killer. Police said 24 investigators have worked on the cases and have followed up on 255 calls from the community and 400 leads.
"Any lead that we get we're going to follow up on," Lt. R. Walker said. "No matter what it may be, we take these very seriously. These people deserve justice. The families deserve justice. You deserve justice and that's our goal."
Police said they need the community's help to solve the killings. They said they believe someone in this area knows something that could help find the killers.
"I personally feel responsible for the people that live in the city of Houston," Hurtt said. "When people are dying in the city of Houston, I feel we have to do more."
Anyone with information on any of the slayings is asked to contact the Houston Police Department Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
