Judge In Slade Trial Stands By Mistrial Denial

A judge stood by his decision Monday to not grant Texas Southern University President Priscilla Slade a mistrial because prosecutors released information about a pretrial plea deal, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Judge Brock Thomas spent the morning interviewing each juror individually in his chambers. The questioning took about half an hour. Thomas decided none of them had been exposed to media reports about the trial.

Slade’s attorneys still asked to put individual reporters on the stand, but Thomas said no.

Thomas told reporters not to conduct interviews anywhere in the courthouse, and warned attorneys they are not to discuss the case with anyone except principals in the case.

Slade’s lawyers asked for a mistrial after reports that she had been offered a plea deal surfaced in a newspaper and in broadcast news reports. The reports quoted prosecutor Donna Goode.

Goode testified Friday that she thought she was speaking off the record when reporters overheard her discussing the deal in court last week. Prosecutors offered to agree to a 25-year sentence for Slade in return for a guilty plea.

Slade reportedly turned down the deal. She’s on trial for misapplication over $200,000 of TSU funds. She could face up to life in prison if she’s found guilty.
