HUNTSVILLE, Texas -- Grieving family members and fellow correctional officers came together Saturday to say goodbye to one of their own, KPRC Local 2 reported.
Susan Canfield was killed when two inmates tried to escape from the Wynne Unit in Huntsville on Monday.
She was remembered for dedicating her life to protecting others.
Hundreds of uniformed officers from across the state of Texas filled the Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum on the campus of Sam Houston State University.
Her infectious smile and quiet demeanor endeared Canfield to the many who loved and respected her.
The 59-year-old corrections officer was on horseback when Jerry Martin and John Ray Falk ran over her while driving a stolen truck, officials said.
The escapees were captured hours later.
Inside the memorial service, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice uniform Canfield wore for seven years laid on display, along with her hat and boots.
Officers wore black mourning badges and tried to comfort each other and Canfield's husband and children, who expressed their pride knowing their wife and mother placed herself directly in harm's way to protect the lives of others.
Canfield's family has asked that donations be made in her honor to the
The 100 Clubor the
Correctional Peace Officers Foundation.
