HOUSTON -- Residents in the Acres Homes area said the seven bodies found in their neighborhood in the past two years has them scared and they want more done, KPRC Local 2 reported Wednesday.
The most recent victim was found on Saturday. Two men found her nude body in a trash-filled ditch in the 1100 block of Bland Street.
Officials with the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now said they want overgrown lots cleaned up, more streetlights and more police patrols.
"This is an extraordinary event. They need to think outside the box and give us more. Give this community more help," said Toni McElroy with ACORN.
Residents said the lots and lack of lighting make their area a haven for criminals.
The first of the seven bodies turned up in January 2006, after residents voiced their concerns.
Homeowners said they need immediate help.
"We don't have a great tax base, so we don't have a lot of money," resident Alana Hill said. "We can't hire private patrols like some neighborhoods can. We're not asking (for) anything that's not a normal city service. They know the dumping is going on. If they was out here, would they be able to dump a body behind a house of God? That bothers me. That troubles my heart. I'm afraid for my daughter."
Two of the bodies were found dumped behind a neighborhood church.
A spokesman with the mayor's office said the city is already doing much of what the citizens asked for. New construction is going up on one of 186 abandoned lots the city has acquired. The city replaced about 300 streetlights in the area about a year ago, he said.
"But that's still not enough. They're making changes. They might be making progress, but they're still not keeping people from getting murdered," said Louis Jenkins, an Acres Homes resident.
Along with the homicides, police are investigating 19 sexual assaults committed in Acres Homes since 2003. Similar to the killings, they believe there are several suspects involved in those assaults.
