HOUSTON -- Seven slayings in two years in the Acres Homes area of northwest Houston are probably not the work of a serial killer, police told KPRC Local 2 Tuesday.
That is according to Capt. Steve Jett of the Houston Police Department.
"No, I don't think there's a serial killer," Jett said.
Jett said he believes his department is closer to identifying a suspect in the killing of 18-year-old Willie Bianca Jones. Her nude body was found Saturday in a trash-filled ditch in the 1100 block of Bland Street.
"We have leads on and we're following them up right now as we're talking. We think this is going to take us to a suspect in a short amount of time," added Jett.
Community leaders gathered Monday near the ditch where Jones' body was found. They went to ask for help in solving this and the other six slayings.
Deric Muhammad, of the Millions More Movement Ministry of Justice said, "Be calm and let us be patient with the investigative process as the Houston Police Department is working as fast as they can," said Deric Muhammad of the Millions More Movement Ministry of Justice. "Again, we don't come here today to bash the police."
But police said they need help solving these cases. At one point, they had 10 investigators checking out clues. Now only two investigators are required. Police said they will add more investigators, if needed.
Robert Muhammad of the Nation of Islam said people need to call police and help solve these cases.
"The young lady whose body was found here was somebody's daughter. Perhaps someone's sister. Perhaps someone's mother. We don't know. We don't know all the circumstances of her death, but we do know that she is dead and it grieves us. It hurts us deeply in our heart," he said.
