HOUSTON -- A northeast Houston family pleaded for their van to be returned to them, so they can transport their handicapped daughter, Local 2 reported Tuesday.
"We need it!" said Cynthia Bess.
It is not just any van. The gold 2003 Chrysler Town & Country was tailor-made for Bess' 17-year-old daughter, Cynessa. Cynessa has cerebral palsy, arthritis, and is mentally retarded.
Cynessa can only travel in her wheelchair, which gives her special support. The van was equipped with a special ramp and a space where the chair can be locked down in the back. It also is marked in several places with the handicapped symbol.
The Besses said they left the van parked in their driveway on Kings Chase Drive on Monday night, just like every other night.
When they woke up Tuesday morning, the van was gone.
The family said their biggest worry was that Cynessa cannot leave the house or travel, even to go to the doctor.
"It's a handicapped van. They might not know it's a child who needs it, but somebody needs it to get around and I can't believe anybody could take it and not feel bad about it," said Cynthia Bess.
The Besses said they wish no ill-will against whoever is responsible. They just want the van back in one piece.
The handicapped license plate number is 3YF-ZG with a handicapped symbol in the center.
Anyone with information about the van is asked to contact the Harris County Sheriff's Office or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
