UPDATED: 11:46 am CDT September 17, 2007

A mother was found dead in a closet in her northeast Houston apartment, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Houston police said residents at an apartment complex in the 9500 block of Crofton Street found children wandering around at about 9:45 a.m. Saturday.

The children told neighbors that they did not know where their mother was, officials said.

The neighbors called the children's relatives, who picked the children up and looked for their mother.

Relatives found the mother's apartment open and called police.

Investigators searched the home and found the mother dead in a closet. She had been strangled and cut on the forearm, officials said.

The mother's identity was not released.

Detectives have not released any information about possible suspects or a motive for the killing.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Houston Police Department Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
