Several northwest Harris County families have been frightened by hunters' gunfire near their homes, KPRC Local 2 reported Sunday.

Residents in the Stone Gate subdivision in the Cypress area said they asked dove hunters who fired shotguns near their homes last weekend to stop hunting so close.

Brettaigne Locandro would not let her 6-year-old daughter play outside because of the gunfire.

"A neighbor did get sprayed with pellets," she said. "It could have been one of our children."

Neighbors said the dove hunters fired their shotguns on undeveloped property about 200 feet from their homes' back yard fences along Stoney Meadow Drive. They said the shooting started early on the mornings of Sept. 8 and 9 and lasted all day.

Texas Parks and Wildlife Agency officials said that dove hunting on the land is legal because it is private property and the hunters have permission to be there.

Neighbors have launched an e-mail campaign against the company that owns the land. They are asking for the company to stop allowing hunters to use their property.
