Students: Mold At School Made Us Sick

For two weeks, teachers and custodians have been saying mold at Key Middle School is making them ill. Some have been taken away from the school by stretcher. Students were complaining of the same symptoms on Friday, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Nakia and Ashley Nelson were supposed to be in class this week, but their mom said she is not sending them back.

"I'll find another school if I have to," said Felicia Nelson.

Her daughters were both on several medications for rashes, allergies and asthma. They said the symptoms started when they started going to class in the annex building at Key Middle School.

There are numerous pictures teachers said they took of mold in different areas inside the annex. Since Aug. 27, teachers and custodians have been complaining about the mold. Some even got sick and were taken to the hospital.

Houston Independent School District spokesman Terry Abbott said the building has been cleaned extensively and has been deemed safe several times. He said the Health Department checked the building on Friday and there was nothing wrong.

"They keep saying there's nothing wrong, but there must be something wrong if people keep getting sick," Felicia Nelson said

She said she is most frustrated that her girls are missing school and losing out on learning.

"We like going to school," Ashley, 11, said. "Now I don't feel safe."

"I can't get my education because of mold," said 13-year-old Nakia.

The district said students can transfer any time they want.
