Stricter Smoking Ban Goes Into Effect Saturday

HOUSTON -- Smokers will have fewer places to light up beginning Saturday when a new, stricter citywide smoking ban goes into effect, KPRC Local 2 reported.
The smoking ban for the city of Houston will expand to bars on Sept. 1.
The current law prohibits smoking in some indoor workplaces, including restaurants, but smoking is allowed in bars and the bar sections of restaurants.
The new law includes a handful of exemptions for cigar bars and tobacco shops, private rooms in nursing homes and designated smoking rooms in hotels, motels and meeting facilities. It also allows smoking on outdoor patios.
Bar owners lost a round in court to have the new ban lifted. They argued the ordinance will be bad for business. The group claimed the ban creates unfair regulations not allowed by state law and asked for a temporary injunction, which a judge denied.
When the smoking ban expands, it will be up to bar managers and their customers to enforce the new rules.
