Fire Destroys Pasadena Church

POSTED: Thursday, August 30, 2007
UPDATED: 9:25 am CDT August 31, 2007

A two-alarm fire destroyed a Pasadena church on Thursday, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Pasadena fire officials said the blaze started at about 7:45 p.m. at the Bethel Christian Center on the 500 block of Austin at Johnson streets.

Investigators said part of the roof caved in and some of the walls collapsed.

The church was not holding services at the time of the fire.

One firefighter was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment for heat exhaustion.

A local family ran the church.

"It tears our heart because we've made such an impact here in the Pasadena area," owner Abel Letty said. "Plus the memories and so many families have been touched. We'll rebuild."

Letty said he thinks an electrical shortage caused the fires, but investigators will determine the exact cause.
