Suspected Car Burglar Caught On Tape, Arrested

A suspected car burglar caught on tape may help end a crime spree in Humble, officials told KPRC Local 2 Thursday.

A rash of vehicle break-ins has been occurring in parking lots. Laptops, GPS systems and other valuables in plain sight are the targets, according to authorities.

Police said Lorenzo Luis was caught on surveillance video breaking into a vehicle in 20 seconds and stealing the GPS system. He fled in his own car and was later apprehended.

"He's been arrested eight times for burglary of a motor vehicle. He's got a pretty extensive history, " said Detective Eric Squier with the Humble Police Department.

Squier said Luis is one of several burglars breaking into cars in the Humble area. His accomplice is still on the loose.

"(They've been) breaking into complainants' vehicles, stealing a laptop, purses and after-market stereos," he said.

Humble police get reports of 40 to 60 car break-ins a month.

"We have some who go and break the windows out. They'll take an instrument, usually a screwdriver and stick it in the wedge of the window, break the window. And then there are others who do what we call, 'pop the locks,' which is they either go in the locks' hole or under the hole and break the lock or locking mechanism, gaining access to the vehicle," Squier said.

Last week, brothers Leonel Montiel and Ricardo Montiel were arrested. Police said they found eight stolen laptops and two guns in their possession.

Investigators said the best protection is to not leave anything in vehicles.

"Don't leave things that are valuable laying inside because they're going to get it," Squier said.

Police said the vehicle burglaries are occurring in broad daylight and the thieves are typically not deterred by car alarms.
