HOUSTON -- Two men have been accused of turning $1 bills into fake $100 bills, KPRC Local 2 reported Thursday.
Harris County Precinct 4 deputy constables said they were alerted when the men tried to use the fake money at a Wal-Mart and Whataburger in northwest Harris County.
"We actually found the suspect in the Whataburger with one of the counterfeit $100 bills in his hand," Lt. Ronnie Hayes said.
Michael Galloway, 27, and Dean Lewis Howell, 25, have been charged with forgery.
"What they do is take a $5 bill or a $1 bill, they wash it, try to get all the ink off of it and then reprint it to either a $50 or $100 bill," Hayes said. "They left some of the ink from the prior denomination on the bill and it was easy to notice when they (the clerks) picked the bill up."
Detectives said they have three of the fake bills and know of one other they plan to recover.
Both men were booked into the Harris County Jail. Galloway was held without bond and Howell's bond was set at $10,000. Both were scheduled to appear in court on Friday.
Investigators said both men have lengthy criminal records.
Galloway has previous convictions on charges of theft, burglary, driving with a suspended license, drug possession and aggravated assault of a public servant.
Howell has spent time in jail on convictions on charges of drug possession, assaulting a family member, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and felony possession of a weapon.
