The Hobby Center for the Performing Arts, 800 Bagby, will soon serve as Houston's premiere entertainment facility in downtown. The Hobby Center for the Performing Arts

It stands on the former locations for the Music Hall and Sam Houston Coliseum. The main stages are in Sarofim Hall and Zikha Hall. Architect Robert A. M. Stern designed the complex.

Patrons donated $92 million to build the new complex. The largest donation came from the Hobby family. The Hobby Center project began as an idea in 1994 when a group of Houstonians considered renovating the Music Hall and Coliseum. But the 1936 structure would have been too costly to overhaul and not a cost-effective method for an entertainment complex, officials said. So the idea for what would become the Hobby Center was born.

On Friday, May 10, Houston Mayor Lee Brown will officially cut the ribbon that opens the Hobby Center.

The Hobby Center will debut with a series of public and private events on May 10, 11 and 12.

The public will be able to tour the facility on May 11, from noon until 6 p.m. The guided tours will include Sarofim Hall, Zilkha Hall, as well as the front of the house and backstage areas.

The Hobby Center will be home to the Theatre Under The Stars and Pace-Clear Channel's Broadway series.
