Houston Paratrooper Dies In Afghanistan

A paratrooper from Houston with the 82nd Airborne Division died from injuries sustained in Afghanistan, KPRC Local 2 reported Monday.

Pvt. Alan J. Austin, 21, was a motor transport operator with the 782nd Brigade Support Battalion.

He died on Sunday from wounds received when his vehicle overturned while traveling in a convoy near Forward Operating Base Sharana.

"Each paratrooper that knows him will remember him in their own way they will grieve in their own way," said Capt. Simon Walbruch, Austin's company commander. "I know that Pfc. Alan Austin will not be forgotten."

Austin's awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Ribbon, and the NATO Medal and the Combat Action Badge.

He is survived by his mother, Rhonda Austin, and his brother, Matthew McDaniel, both of Houston.

Austin joined the Army in March 2006 and completed basic training in June.
