Police: Wrestling Caused 3-Year-Old's Death

A 28-year-old man was arrested after a 3-year-old boy died of injuries that occurred when the man was wrestling with the boy and his two siblings, police told KPRC Local 2.

Kevron Powell was charged with reckless injury to a child and was being held in the Harris County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bond. A judge assigned him an attorney Monday morning.

Police said David Price suffered a head injury Friday while Powell was caring for him and his 6-year-old and 8-year-old siblings in a southwest Houston home in the 7000 block of Cook. Powell also was caring for his 1-year-old son at the time.

David was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where he died Saturday morning, police said.

The children's mother, Channa Simmons, who is Powell's girlfriend, was at work.

Child Protective Services got a court order to retain custody of Simmons' 6- and 8-year-old boys, as well as Powell's 15-month-old son.

"Right now, we're not sure we know what happened. We're not sure we have a really good idea of mom's ability to protect the children. We want to complete our investigation, get autopsy results and look at what we need to do to make sure the children are safe," said Gwen Carter with CPS.

Simmons has been a teacher at the Robindale school for the past year. The school set up a memorial fund to pay for the funeral, offering to match any donations it receives.

The David Price Memorial Fund has been set up at Frost Bank. Contributions can be made at any branch or at the Robindale school, located in the 6600 block of Alder in southwest Houston.
