Teen Drowns At Galveston Beach

POSTED: Thursday, August 9, 2007

A teenager drowned at a Galveston beach on Wednesday, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Galveston Beach Patrol officials said rip currents pulled the 16-year-old under water on the beach near 33rd Street at about 7:30 p.m.

The teen was swimming near a jetty with his uncle. The uncle searched for him for several minutes but did not find him until he washed up near the jetty.

A passer-by and nurse pulled the teen out of the water and gave him CPR before he was taken to the University of Texas Medical Branch, where he died.

The lifeguard assigned to the area got off duty about 30 minutes before the incident, officials said.

Galveston police said the teen, whose identity was not released, lived in Mexico and was visiting family in League City.
